  • Abbas has impressed in his maiden stint with Leicestershire.

Pakistan seamer Mohammad Abbas will return as Leicestershire County Cricket Club’s overseas player in the 2019 season, the club announced on Friday.

The 28-year-old has had an impressive maiden stint in the County Championship Division Two this year with a total of 50 wickets at an outstanding average of 17.72.

He starred in Leicestershire’s most recent win over Durham with match figures of 10-52.

The seamer had bagged the man of the series award during Pakistan’s tour of England this summer after picking up an eight-wicket haul in his side’s memorable win at Lord’s.

“I have really enjoyed my time at Leicestershire County Cricket Club. Everybody has made me and my family feel very welcome. I have relished the chance to be a senior bowler, and I am looking forward to coming back next year,” Abbas told the club’s website after the announcement of his extension.

His extension was welcomed by Leicestershire coach Paul Nixon who described the Pakistan man as a ‘class act’.

“Mo [Mohammad Abbas] has been an absolute class act this year. His bowling has been outstanding, constantly asking the batsmen questions by beating the edge on both sides. He is world-class; a humble man who is a brilliant role model,” Nixon said.

“Even when Mo was away taking wickets for Pakistan earlier this year, he kept in touch and wished us well before matches. He has played a huge role in our success this season. We’re absolutely delighted that Mo will be returning next season,” he added.

In eight Tests so far for Pakistan, Abbas has picked up 42 wickets at an average of just 17.69.
