Rashid Khan (c) will turn out for Durban Heat in the inaugural league.

The player draft for South Africa’s inaugural Mzansi T20 Super League took place in Cape Town on Wednesday with the six franchises making their squad picks.

The six franchises had already been allotted a marquee South African player each last week with Imran Tahir, Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis, JP Duminy and Kagiso Rabada being the designated players.

However, a shoulder injury to JP Duminy has seen the all-rounder ruled out of the tournament with wicketkeeper batsman Quinton de Kock taking his place as the South African marquee player for Cape Town Blitz.

Afghanistan star Rashid Khan was the first international marquee player to be snapped up in the draft on Wednesday with Durban Heat securing the leg-spinner’s services.

West Indies stalwart Chris Gayle was the next marquee player to go under the hammer with Jozi Stars snapping up the left-handed opener.

His compatriot Dwayne Bravo became Paarl Rocks’ international marquee players while England’s Eoin Morgan and Jason Roy were picked up by Tshwane Spartans and Nelson Mandela Bay Giants respectively. Another Englishman in Dawid Malan was picked by Cape Town Blitz as their international marquee player.

Pakistan’s Asif Ali was picked up by Cape Town Blitz who also secured the services of South Africa pace ace Dale Steyn. Lungi Ngidi went the way of Tshwane Spartans while Durban Heat pocketed David Miller.

The inaugural edition of the league will get underway on November 16 and is slated to continue until December 16.
