  • Khawaja could miss the start of the Test series against India.

Australia batsman Usman Khawaja could be a doubt for the visit of India after scans on his injured left knee revealed a meniscal tear.

The Aussie top-order batsman sustained an injury to his knee during a fielding drill ahead of the third day of the ongoing Abu Dhabi Test against Pakistan.

Khawaja did not take the field at all on the third day and was later sent to the hospital for scans.

The left-hander did not bat in the second Test and is now looking likely to miss the start of Australia’s year-end series against India.

The 31-year-old is likely to undergo surgery for the meniscal tear which would sideline him for a lengthy spell.

This is not the first time that the batsman has had troubles with his left knee. In 2014, Khawaja tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) while training with Big Bash League outfit Sydney Thunder.

Khawaja has been Australia's best batsman in the series.

That injury had seen Khawaja sidelined for seven months. Fortunately for the Aussie, the latest injury does not seem related to his ACL.

Khawaja has been Australia’s best batsman in the two-match series with 276 runs so far. He registered a fine 81 in the first innings of the opening Test before notching up a match-saving 141 in the second innings.
