  • Munaf (r) has called time on his professional career.

Former India pacer Munaf Patel on Saturday announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.

The 2011 ICC World Cup winning bowler played a total of 13 Tests, 70 ODIs and three T20Is for India over the course of his career after making his international debut in 2006 against England.

The 35-year-old’s last appearance in India colours came in 2011 in an ODI against England at Cardiff.

“There is no special reason, age is not on my side, fitness is not the same. Youngsters are there waiting for chances and it doesn’t look nice if I keep hanging on. The main thing is there is no motivation left,” he told the Indian Express on Saturday.

“I was part of World Cup winning team in 2011; there can’t be a greater high than that.

“There is no regret; after all the cricketers I played with have retired. Only (MS) Dhoni is left. So, there is no sadness as such. Everyone’s time is up; I would have been sad had others been playing and I had quit.”

Munaf played a key role in India's 2011 World Cup triumph.

The Gujarat-born bowler has represented Mumbai, Maharashtra and Baroda in domestic cricket apart from his home-state. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), he has donned the colours of Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Lions.

Of late though, the pacer has failed to earn any IPL contract and did not feature in the 2018 edition after playing just two matches in 2017. He has also not played a first-class match since 2016.

He will now participate in the T10 League in the UAE alongside other former India pacers like Zaheer Khan and Praveen Kumar.

Munaf revealed that he would like to take up a coaching career in cricket post retirement.
