Pakistan dismissed New Zealand for 249 to get a victory target of 176 in the first Test in Abu Dhabi.
Leg-spinner Yasir Shah and seamer Hasan Ali picked up five wickets each to restrict the Kiwis.
Shah provided Pakistan with a vital breakthrough by dismissing Henry Nicholls as he broke a century stand for the fifth wicket between the Kiwi batsman and BJ Watling. Nicholls and Watling brought up fine half-centuries as New Zealand’s overall second innings lead swelled past the 100-run mark in the second session of day three.
In reply, Pakistan reached 37-0 at stumps.
