  • Erratic: Umesh Yadav proved expensive, conceding 97 runs in 16 overs.

Indian bowling coach Bharathi Arun admitted his bowlers are still a work in progress after another difficult day in the ongoing Test

    series against Australia yesterday.

In the last three Tests, the bowlers have failed to take 20 wickets and conceded over 500 runs three times. They were on course for a similar run after Australia had raced to 348-2 on the opening day of the fourth and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

“It’s been a mixed bag, and we have to be a lot more disciplined than what we are,” Arun said yesterday. “But there have been
occasions where we have shown discipline. I think the consistency is going to be the key.”

“There is a lot of work that needs to be done on that front.

He added: “We are a young side, we are in the process of rebuilding and learning. We have performed very well so far, we have been competitive. If you notice, the first two matches could have gone either way. There are a lot of lessons to be learnt. The fact is that we are not as consistent as we need to be.”

Umesh Yadav was the biggest culprit as he went for 97 runs in his 16 overs. The bowlers woes were compounded with the fielders dropping three catches.

Ravichandran Ashwin, however, remained optimistic. “It was a very tough day. It’s very important that we pick ourselves up," he said.

“If we can keep them down to (a reasonable score) we can get back into it."
