The West Indies have recalled batsman Darren Bravo for the first Test against England, as well as adding uncapped pair John Campbell and Shamarh Brooks.

Bravo, 29, played the last of his 49 Tests in November 2016 and has been handed the chance to kickstart a once-promising career interrupted by disputes with the West Indies Board.

Joining him in a 13-man squad are 26-year-old Campbell and 30-year-old Brooks, with Kieran Powell and Sunil Ambris dropped for the series opener on January 23 in Barbados.

Paceman Alzarri Joseph, who lined up against England in Tuesday’s warm-up match against a cricket West Indies President’s XI, was also named, but concerns over his match fitness mean a place for the highly-rated Oshane Thomas as cover.

The Windies lost their last two Tests in Bangladesh and chairman of selectors Courtney Browne said: “With the return of Darren Bravo, who will add value to a batting department, we expect to see marked improvement.

“After a difficult Test Series in Bangladesh late last year the opportunity presents itself for our team to pick itself up. Although a tough series against England is anticipated, home turf has always been a place where our team has made strides.”

West Indies squad for first Test: J Holder (c), K Brathwaite, Darren Bravo, S Brooks, J Campbell, R Chase, S Dowrich, S Gabriel, S Hetmyer, S Hope, A Joseph, K Roach, J Warrican, O Thomas (cover).
