  • A maiden Test call up for Marcus Stoinis.

Marcus Stoinis has been handed his maiden Test call up after he was added to Australia’s squad for the second and final clash against Sri Lanka which will take place in Canberra.

On Saturday, the Aussies dispatched Sri Lanka by an innings and 40 runs in the day/night Test at Brisbane with pacer Pat Cummins picking up a 10-wicket match haul.

Following the win, Australia announced the addition of Stoinis for the Manuka Oval Test while opener Matt Renshaw was released from the squad.

“We made the decision to add Marcus to give us the flexibility to play an all-rounder in the event the conditions require an extra bowling option in the line-up,” Australia national selector Trevor Hohns stated.

“Marcus has been a consistent performer this season, he has displayed strong all-round form in first-class cricket and continued that form into the Australian ODI series against India,” he added.

Stoinis has already represented Australia in 24 ODIs and 17 T20s so far in his career but is yet to be capped at the Test level.

The all-rounder has been in good form with both bat and ball for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League and has registered two half-centuries and picked up a total of six wickets in his side’s two most recent matches.

The second Test between Australia and Sri Lanka at the Manuka Oval in Canberra will get underway on February 1.
