  • A maiden Test ton for Jeet Raval (r).

A maiden ton from opener Jeet Raval took centerstage as hosts New Zealand asserted their dominance over Bangladesh in the first Test between the two sides at Hamilton.

Raval and his opening partner Tom Latham both cracked centuries while skipper Kane Williamson was nearing his on a day two at Hamilton where New Zealand extended their first-innings total to 451-4.

Resuming the day at 86-0, the Kiwi opening pair of Raval and Latham continued to assert themselves on the Bangladesh bowling attack under excellent conditions for batting at Hamilton.

The openers put on a 254-run stand between themselves before Raval (132) was dismissed by Mahmudullah. The partnership recorded by Raval and Latham is now the third highest in New Zealand’s Test history.

Latham’s Test resurgence continued with the left-hander registering his fourth 150-plus score in the format before he fell to Soumya Sarkar.

    Williamson was unbeaten on 93.

    Williamson was unbeaten on 93.

Despite Ross Taylor falling cheaply, there would no relief for the tourists with Williamson and Henry Nicholls putting on a century stand for the fourth wicket. Nicholls was dismissed late in the day by Mehidy Hasan, bringing nightwatchman Neil Wagner to the crease before stumps were drawn at Hamilton.

Williamson was unbeaten on 93 with the Kiwi skipper inching towards a 20th Test ton. It was a tough day in the field for Bangladesh with three of the four wickets they picked coming from their part-time bowlers. It was Sarkar, in fact, who was the pick of the Bangladesh bowlers with figures of 2-57 from his 19 overs.

Earlier on day one, Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal had registered a superb century at almost run-a-ball but the visitors ultimately collapsed for 234 all out following a five-wicket burst from Wagner.
