  • Faf du Plessis and Quinton de Kock.

Quinton de Kock might have led the South Africa T20I outfit in their recent series in India but the wicketkeeper batsman expects Faf du Plessis to return as skipper for next year’s World Cup in Australia.

Du Plessis has been leading across all three formats for many years now, however, the middle-order stalwart was rested for the three-match series in India which South Africa lost by 2-1.

De Kock has been talked up as the long-term successor to the now 35-year-old du Plessis and it is a role he would be happy to accept when it does eventually fall on his shoulders.

“The way I see it is that I was just a replacement,” the 26-year-old told ESPNcricinfo ahead of the second edition of the Mzansi Super League (MSL).

“That’s the way I took it. For now, it’s still Faf’s baby. But maybe if things change and they do want me to do it, then I will do it.

“For the moment, I am not looking too far ahead. I am just trying to look at how I can help out with the youngsters, with the new guys in the T20 team, and by myself, just getting better and getting ready for the T20 World Cup next year. But if that does come upon me, then I will try and grab it with both hands.”

Du Plessis, on his part, had previously indicated that he would like to continue until the 2020 World Cup at least in the shortest format of the game.
