The Proteas quick has been officially ruled out of the 2019 edition after sustaining a shoulder injury during the ODI series against Sri Lanka.
The 25-year-old is the not the first Kolkata pacer to be ruled out of the upcoming edition with the young duo of Shivam Mavi and Kamlesh Nagarkoti already sidelined. The two former India U19 pacers have been replaced by Sandeep Warrier and KC Cariappa in the Knight Riders squad.
The Kolkata franchise have not yet named a replacement for the injured Nortje although one is expected to be announced in the near future given the already depleted nature of the squad.
Nortje had caught the eye of the franchise during the Mzansi Super League where he picked up eight wickets in just three matches. The right-armed pacer had subsequently been handed his ODI debut in the recent series against Sri Lanka where he impressed with eight dismissals in his four appearances.
The Dinesh Karthik-led Kolkata Knight Riders are bidding to win their third IPL title after having emerged as champions in the 2012 and 2014 editions previously. They will open their 2019 IPL campaign at the Eden Gardens on March 24 when they take on last season’s runners-up Sunrisers Hyderabad.
