Ravi Ashwin continued to lead from the front as his all-round effort helped Kings XI Punjab overpower Rajasthan Royals by 12 runs in Mohali on Tuesday.

KXIP posted an above par 182-6, with Ashwin providing the boost right at the end with 17 off just four balls. Then with the ball, the off-spinner accounted for innings top scorer Rahul Tripathi and Sanju Samson, finishing with 2-24 off his four overs, as the visitors were restricted to 168-7.

Punjab thus moved into fourth spot with their fifth win while Rajasthan sunk to their sixth defeat, edging closer to the playoff exit.

KL’s strange knock

It is important to get your eye in as a batsman before going after the bowlers. But Kings XI opener KL Rahul took way too much time to get going. After 10 overs, Rahul was just 13 off 23 balls.

His slow start put pressure on other Kings XI batsmen to take more chances. Chris Gayle (30 off 22) edged an off cutter from Jofra Archer behind while Mayank Agarwal slog swept Ish Sodhi to long on for 26 off 12.

Just as he started to get going after reaching 50 off 44 balls, Rahul got caught at point at the start of the 18th over, which left too few deliveries for the remaining batsmen to aim for a 200-plus total.

Skipper Ashwin had to hit a four and two successive sixes in the final over from Dhawal Kulkarni to take the total past 180.

Archer’s day out

Archer was in the thick of things the day before England’s World Cup squad was to be announced. He finished with an incredible 3-15 and took two catches. In fact, the Barbadian was involved in the first five wickets to fall.

Without him, Rajasthan would have faced a target above 200 for sure.

Rajasthan get bogged down

The pitch in Mohali was not the flattest one. Jos Buttler tried to target debutant left-arm quick Arshdeep Singh but top edged a slower one behind to be out for 23 off 17.

Samson just couldn’t get going and was bowled by a carom ball by Ashwin.

Tripathi played an identical knock to his KXIP namesake, labouring to 50 off 45. He fell at the end of the 16th over, getting caught off another carom ball from Ashwin as Rajasthan needed 56 off 24 balls. The game was out of the Royals’ grasp by then.

We are past the halfway point of IPL 2019 and by now fans must have a decent idea as to how to navigate the world of IPL Fantasy League.

It’s round five of the fantasy league which is run by Dream 11, official partners of IPL, and we are here to help you make the right calls. Once again, just five trades are allowed for this round.

TOP TIP ROUND 5

Go big on Delhi, Punjab tricky proposition

Delhi Capitals play three matches this round. They are on the rise in this year’s IPL and have two almost guaranteed fantasy mines in Rishabh Pant and Kagiso Rabada. Kings XI Punjab, on the other hand, have gone off the boil and also play just the one game this round. But they have two mouthwatering options in KL Rahul and Chris Gayle. So tread carefully. Also, the injuries are starting to pile up for Andre Russell which make him a risky pick.

BATSMEN

AB de Villiers (10.5 credits)

The RCB batsman has regained his touch for sure. While Bangalore have gone from bad to worse, at least ABD is firing again. Three fifties in his last four innings mean the South African star is going to set the fantasy registers ringing.

David Warner (11 cr)

The Sunrisers batsman must be on a high after learning of his inclusion in Australia’s World Cup squad. With 400 runs already under his belt, the left-handed batsman is in vintage form and should bring in consistent points. He plays at home twice and if he gets decent pitches, he’ll be unstoppable.

Shreyas Iyer (9 cr)

The Delhi Capitals skipper has been a quiet performer this season as a batsman and leader. Delhi are comfortable near the top of the points table and Iyer has been consistent as well with three 40-plus scores in his last four matches.

BOWLERS

Kagiso Rabada (8.5 cr)

The Delhi pacer has been unplayable at times. Plus, he is top wicket taker this season. It won’t be the worst idea to not only have him in your team but as your vice-captain as well. He’s averaging nearly two wickets per game.

Kagiso Rabada.

Kagiso Rabada.

Imran Tahir (7.5 cr)

The Chennai veteran leg-spinner is having an absolute ball in IPL 2019. Not only does he have 13 wickets from eight matches, his economy is a staggering 5.7. When he gets a wicket, he gets them by the bagful. An absolute steal at 7.5.

Yuzvendra Chahal (8.5 cr)

Another jewel in the crumbling crown of RCB. The leg-spinner has been brilliant as far as taking wickets and keeping the runs down are concerned. Has gone wicketless just once, going from strength to strength.

ALL-ROUNDERS

Chris Morris (8 cr)

The Delhi all-rounder has been in peak form this season. Has been used as an enforcer by Delhi, with 11 wickets from six matches. Yet to get a decent outing with the bat but more than capable of hitting the long ball.

Moeen Ali (8 cr)

RCB’s England all-rounder scored a fifty and took two wickets in the last game against Mumbai. With just two weeks to go before he leaves for England to join the World Cup camp, expect Moeen to up the ante with bat and ball. Moeen has an economy of 6.3 – the fifth best in the league.

WICKETKEEPER

Rishabh Pant (9.5 cr)

Straightforward call there. The Delhi keeper will get three outings this round and after missing out on World Cup selection, will have a point to prove. Has got quick starts in almost every innings, plus dismissals in all but one game.

MS Dhoni (9.5 cr)

The Chennai skipper is fired up alright. Was lucky to get away with just a fine for ‘engaging’ with the umpire after re-entering the field against Rajasthan. Looks on top of his game with the glove and bat. Out for less than 20 just twice.

Captain: Rishabh Pant

Vice-captain: Kagiso Rabada
