  • Right back at it again: Jonathan Figy.

The star batsman got his campaign off to a roaring start, knocking 72 runs off 52 balls as ADIS’ 171 overwhelmed Merryland School, who were all out for 86 at Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

Although strong performances have become the norm for Figy, the ease with which the UAE Under-19 international plays his shots never ceases to impress.

“It was a good start, but the pitch was quite hard to bat on and really move around,” Figy said. “I just had to stay there because I know I can make it up in the end and just build a good innings.”

Statistics and acclaim aren’t things Figy has been lacking. It has been the titles that have so far eluded him, with losses to Delhi Private School Sharjah and Our Own Zenith coming in the previous two years in the U-15 finals. But it’s a new season and Figy is optimistic of finally finding some luck.

“Last two years we’ve been quite unlucky going to the finals but losing,” he said. “It’s fine. This year we’ll look for the win, obviously always staying hungry.”

Following the success of the U-17 side this weekend, ADIS’ U-14 squad looking good themselves in a comfortable win, also over Merryland.

Bowling first, ADIS had a devastating attack that showcased Sailles Jaishankar skills, capturing five scalps to help restrict Merryland to 48 all out, a total ADIS chased down in just 5.4 overs.

Jaishankar claimed he “came to take wickets” and did just that, saying: “The wicket was good for me because my ball was skidding. Combined with the gust of wind, it was really helping my swing as well.”
