A day after Nepal reclaimed ICC membership on a conditional basis, veteran batsman Paras Khadka announced his resignation as the skipper of the men’s team.

The 31-year-old took over the reins of the Nepalese team in 2009 and was the longest serving captain of any team in associate cricket. Khadka’s tenure saw the time rise meteorically in international cricket with Nepal attaining ODI status for the first time in their history in May, last year.

The right-hander, who can also bowl some hand off-spin as well as medium pace, is the first Nepalese batsman to register an ODI ton when he led the team to a famous series victory over the UAE earlier this year.

Most recently in September, he became the first Nepal batsman to score a T20I ton with his feat coming against Singapore.

Khadka took to Instagram to announce his decision to step down from captaincy.

“Great to know that the suspension of Nepal cricket has been lifted and would like to wish the new committee to work for the betterment of Nepal cricket, players and its stake holders,” he wrote in his social media post.

“I have hereby decided to resign from my post as the captain of Nepal cricket team as there has to be a new way of taking things forward with a fresh start and a committed vision with everyone involved.

“Would like to thank all the players, coaches, umpires, groundsmen, friends, and my family who have helped me throughout this incredible journey. Until next time.”

Star Nepal leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane hailed Khadka for the leadership he has displayed over the course of his captaincy.
