Lahore Qalandars kept their cool to register their second straight win and deny Karachi Kings in a thrilling Super Over triumph in the the Pakistan Super League on Sunday.

With the scores tied at 163, captain Brendon McCullum hit a six as Lahore posted 11 in their six deliveries off Mohammad Amir in the Super Over. Karachi could only manage eight in their over.

The result hurt Karachi Kings even more as fast bowler Usman Khan had overstepped after Lahore batsman Sohail Akhtar was caught off what should have been the final delivery of the match with three needed to win.

The result means Karachi Kings remain in third position with nine points, while Lahore remain rooted to the bottom.

Here are the key talking points from the match in Dubai:

SIMMONS AND AZAM FIND THEIR GROOVE

Karachi’s total of 163-5 was largely down to the efforts of Lendl Simmons and Babar Azam. Simmons started off with hit three boundaries off Anton Devcich. After Joe Denly was out early on, Simmons was joined by Azam – who had already amassed 145 runs in his last three innings –  and the pair put on a 72-run stand. Simmons’ 55 off 39 was his first half-century of PSL 3, while Azam registered his third fifty in four matches with a 61-run effort. Unfortunately for head coach Mickey Arthur, it wasn’t enough.

    SHAHEEN WINS THE AFRIDI BATTLE

After his sensational 5-4 effort in their victory over Multan Sultans on Friday, teh focus was on 17-year-old pacer Shaheen Afridi. He didn’t have much luck with the ball until the 19th over. Shahid Afridi welcomed the teenager with a 79m six. But Shaheen had teh final word as he rattled the veteran’s stumps.

But with figures of 1-42, there’s still plenty to learn for Shaheen who gave away five wides in the final over.

    LAHORE SHOW FIGHT

Eliminated prior to the game, Lahore were playing for pride. And that worked in favour of Brendon McCullum’s side who made things difficult for Karachi. Agha Salman’s half-century and Sohail Khan’s three wickets were some of the positives that head coach Aaqib Javed can take as they pushed a strong Karachi side all the way for a memorable win.
