  • Honoured: Khurram Khan.

Former national team captain Khurram Khan was honoured for his services to UAE cricket by the Punjab Premier League during their launch ceremony in Dubai.

The long-serving batsman ended his 14-year international career in June after the UAE’s first-round defeat to Ireland in the ICC Intercontinental Cup.

Khurram had been a mainstay through a rise that saw the UAE qualify for last year’s World Twenty20 and 2015 World Cup.

Despite juggling his job as a flight purser for Emirates Airline with his cricket, the 44-year-old continued to pile on the runs, scoring more than 5,700 in all formats.

He entered the record books last year, becoming the oldest ODI centurion when he struck 132 against Afghanistan. Given his impressive CV, it was no surprise to see him receiving the special award at the Crowne Plaza.

“I feel really honoured to have received this award and it really means a lot to me,” said Khurram, who only came to know about the award on Tuesday.

“I had a really strong international career for the UAE and I do miss the game since I retired four months ago. But I’m enjoying my free time at the moment, spending as much time as possible with my family when I’m not working.”

Some of the UAE’s top domestic sides, including Danube Lions, Multiplex International, Ibsons and Interface will battle for glory in the PPL T20 competition at Ajman Oval from October 29.

Khurram is not short of offers but hopes to be involved in the competition.

“I’ve had some offers from the clubs but I have to look at my work rota and see if I can play a few games,” he said.
