  • Recently sacked Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood believes the club is far bigger than the relegation battles that have consumed them in recent years.

Appearing on beINSPORTS’ coverage of Villa vs Manchester City, Sherwood admitted that results were not good enough for a club that he believes should be competing for places further up the Premier League table.

Sherwood was sacked two weeks ago to the day after picking up just four points from the first ten games and going on a run of six consecutive league defeats.

“It’s a huge football club and there are some superb people there that have been there a long time and deserve some success,” said Sherwood on beINSPORTS.

“It’s been a long time coming. They’ve not had a lot to cheer about.

“To cheer about staying in the league is not what a club that size should be doing.”

Sherwood, who was replaced by French boss Remi Garde, acknowledged that things did not go to plan at Villa after a promising start at the club saw him save them from relegation and take them to a first FA Cup final since 2000.

“At the time I went in last season, I went in with 12 games to go and one foot in the Championship,” added the former Tottenham Hotspur manager.

“We managed to get enough wins to survive and then you get a bit of breathing space to look ahead to the next season.”

That breathing space did not last long, Sherwood sacked after falling to eight wins out of the nine matches that followed their opening day win against Bournemouth.

Fellow pundit, and out-of-work manager, Nigel Pearson believes the likes of Sherwood need to be given more time at clubs, bemoaning Premier League chairmen’s short-termism when it comes to managers.

“For a club of that size to go through the managers they have in a short space of time is not addressing their issues. There is no quick fix,” said Pearson.

“There needs to be some transparency. For fans in general there is not enough transparency.”
