  • A Christmas cracker to get you in the festive spirit – well, if you’re of an FC Barcelona persuasion at least – as we pay tribute to Lionel Messi’s near perfect 2012, the likes of which we are unlikely to see ever again.

Messi scored 91 goals in just 69 games for club and country in the calendar year – surpassing the previous best of 85 set by German legend Gerd Muller in 1972.

Fittingly, Muller himself led the tributes to the Argentine maestro when he beat his record earlier in the month with a double in Barca’s win over Real Betis.

“My record stood for 40 years – 85 goals in 60 games – and now the best player in the world has broken it, and I’m delighted for him,” said Muller. He is an incredible player, gigantic.”

    NUMBERS OF A GENIUS

5 – Messi is the only player to score five goals in a Champions League match, against Bayer Leverkusen.

6 – goals scored against Malaga and Leverkusen. More than any other club in 2012.

9 – assists provided by Andres Iniesta, more than any other player.

12 – Most goals scored in a year by a player for Argentina, jointly held with Gabriel Batistuta.

21 – of his goals were set pieces (14 penalties and seven free kicks)

78 – goals were inside the box and 13 from outside.

81 – of his 91 scored with his left foot. Seven with his right, three with his head.

    192 – Messi’s 86th of 2012 also gave him 192 La Liga goals, breaking Cesar Rodriguez’s record (1942-55).

254 – wins for Messi in a Barcelona shirt from 357 matches since making his debut in 2004.

Now sit back for the next 10 minutes and drink in every one of Messi’s record breaking goals over the past 12 months. A christmas cracker each and every one.
