  • Hull City’s Player of the Year Ahmed Elmohamady believes his fellow Egyptian Mohamed Nagy “Gedo” has what it takes to star in the Premier League next season following his brief but highly effective stint at the KC Stadium.

Gedo, who joined Hull on loan from Egyptian giants Al Ahly last January along with his team-mate Ahmed Fathi, scored five goals for the Tigers before picking up a foot injury that ended his season prematurely.

But Elmohamady – who was on loan from Sunderland – says Gedo deserves a shot at the Premier League after proving invaluable in Hull  promotion to English football’s top-flight.

“Gedo had a brilliant start with Hull,” Elmohamady told Sport360° during a short visit to Dubai. “I think he started scoring from his second match and he scored five goals but he got unlucky and got injured after that.

“Gedo helped us a lot and his goals were crucial and came at very important moments for us. We needed someone like him – a striker like him to score goals for us. Hopefully he’ll recover soon and we can see him shine on the pitch again.

“He’s a brilliant player and has the right mentality and can play in any club in the Premier League. Of course it’s tough to tell now what he’s going to do because he’s recovering from surgery.”

Elmohamady himself is uncertain about his future, whether he will continue with Hull or return to Sunderland but the 25-year-old right-back is now focused on Egypt’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

The Pharaohs have picked up nine points from their first three matches in their qualifying campaign and are in good position under the guidance of American coach Bob Bradley.

“We have two very tough matches in June against Zimbabwe and Mozambique away from home,” said Elmohamady. “We are focused and will go there knowing exactly what we want to do. Bob Bradley is doing great so far, his entire staff and the players are all focused.

“The league back in Egypt isn’t going in a typical way, but the format they are playing in, with two groups, at least brought back the fitness of the players and they are playing matches which is better than the friendlies they were playing before. Most of our players are playing in Egypt so the return of the league was important.

“Our camp will begin on June 1st and we have a friendly on the fourth against Botswana at home but then we’re travelling for the two matches and won’t return home before we’re done with both of them, which is a good thing to be away from the pressure at home and we can stay focused while we are there and hopefully we’ll come back with the six points inshallah.”
