  • Manchester United’s bid to sign Thiago Alcantara has been thrown into doubt after the player pledged his love for Barcelona.

New United boss David Moyes has made Thiago, 22, one of his top targets this summer with reports claiming the Premier League champions have already tabled a five-year deal, worth a reported £100,000-a-week, to entice the player.

Barca are loath to lose the midfield playmaker following his starring role at the recently concluded European Under-21 Championships, which included a hat-trick in the final as Spain retained their title.

Reports claim Barca have offered Thiago a new contract at the Camp Nou, not only doubling his current salary but crucially promising him more first-team opportunities that he so craves ahead of next summer’s World Cup finals.

And it appears their charm offensive has had the desired effect with Thiago tweeting a picture of himself and younger brother, Rafinha, who also plays for the club, with the caption: “I ♥ Barcelona”.

A clause in Thiago’s contract means he is available for as little as £17million after failing to make enough first-team appearances last season, although it is due to expire on August 1.

Bayern Munich, managed by former Barca boss Pep Guardiola, have also been credited with an interest as have Manchester City in recent days after they missed out on Real Madrid-bound Isco.

However, Old Trafford remains Thiago’s most likely destination should the player opt to leave Catalunya with further developments expected in the coming days.

Thiago’s father, former Brazil international Mazinho, is set for talks with Barca’s hierarchy having already met United’s officials.

Meanwhile, United are expected to return with an improved offer for England left-back Leighton Baines after Everton turned down their opening £12m offer.
