  • New Arrival: Rim Chang-woo.

Al Wahda have signed South Korea defender Rim Chang-woo on a two-year contract as a replacement for departed Asian-qualified star Hussain Fadhel.

Rim, 23, will head to the capital on Tuesday to complete the formalities on a deal worth $1 million from Ulsan Hyundai FC.

The versatile defender – a right-back who can also play in the middle – broke into the Taegeuk Warriors’ set-up last year and has earned three caps. His imminent arrival comes after centre-back Fadhel’s threeseason long, successive loan deal from Kuwait’s Qadsia SC was ended prematurely.

“Al Wahda is pleased to announce that they have signed the South Korean Rim Chang-woo, on a two-year contract as of January 2016 until 2018 as a replacement for the Kuwaiti Hussain Fadhel,” the Clarets announced on their website.

“The player will arrive on Tuesday morning to complete the registration procedures.”

Rim was a regular for Horangi during the 2015 K League Classic, scoring once in 27 games as they finished seventh. This followed a productive loan spell at Daejeon Citizen in the previous edition.

The 6ft tall star has previously racked up a number of appearances for South Korea’s junior sides. He represented his nation with distinction at the 2014 Asian Games in an U-23 side, notably scoring the winner deep into extra time during the final against bitter rivals North Korea.

Rim made his senior debut against China during August’s 2015 EAFF East Asian Cup. He will fill the considerable void left by Fadhel.

The 31-year-old has formed a solid centre-back pairing with UAE star Hamdan Al Kamali, making 54 appearances in the Arabian Gulf League.

“For three distinguished seasons, Hussein Fadhel represented Al Wahda,” the club tweeted. “Thank you and good luck always and forever.”

Rim will not be able to compete in tomorrow’s Arabian Gulf Cup semi-final at Al Wasl. But he should be available when their top-flight commitments resume at Al Shabab on January 23.
