  • Stand out player: John Stiven Mendoza (R) of Chennaiyan FC scored two of his side's goals against Mumbai FC.

John Stiven Mendoza and Elano scored two goals each as Chennaiyin FC ran out convincing 5-1 winners against Mumbai City FC in the biggest result of the Indian Super League weekend.

Chennai's first half performance was dominant as their high pressing game won them a penalty in the ninth minute, which was converted by Elano.

It was hard to contain Elano during the first half as he made a stunning run and topped it off with a brilliant through ball to Jeje, who left Subrata Paul helpless in front of the goal on the 26th minute to double Chennai's advantage.

The lead was further enhanced on the 41st minute when Mumbai’s defence gave in to continuous pressure from Chennai as Mendoza converted a drop ball from Subrata Paul to make it 3-0.

Mendoza scored his second goal three minutes later, heading in at the far post to sink the visitors at half time.

Elano completed the scoring on the 70th minute to make it 5-0 to take the game completely out of Mumbai’s hand.

However, Mumbai added a consolation goal three minutes before full-time when captain Syed Nabi tapped home from close range.

League leaders Atletico de Kolkata were held to a 1-1 draw by Kerala Blasters earlier in the week.

Despite the draw, they hold a 2-point lead at the top of the table on 11 points, with second placed Chennaiyin FC on nine points.

The two teams from Maharashtra find themselves at the bottom of the table with a lot of work to do after only four games played. Despite being the most expensive team, Mumbai has just managed one win in four games.

Second from bottom FC Goa got their first win after five games in the ISL as they defeated Delhi Dynamos 2-1 in a fiercely contested game.
