There are many parallels between Game of Thrones and the game of football.

From storied institutions who have long reigned to the new names spreading throughout the map, these two worlds are much closer than you think.

There are the individual stars and those who fight for the collective, with villains woven into the narrative.

There’s also a massive talent pool from which to recruit a team capable of challenging for major honours.

So of the characters from the latest and last iteration, who would make into an XI which travels well from GOT to the UCL?

    SEVEN KINGDOMS UNITED – 4-3-3

    GK – Brienne of Tarth

Jaime Lannister might not consider her much of a keeper, but the hulking knight has the right credentials to protect the house. After her slip up with Renly Baratheon, Brienne recovered to ably safeguard Starks and a Lannister, emerging as a (Lord) commanding figure. The first female knight and the first on our teamsheet.

    RB – Ser Jorah Mormont

The modern right-back is usually an exiled winger and so banished northern Lord, Jorah, is the ideal man to fill this role. Having gained experience abroad, the journeyman defender returns as a wily old veteran, although a little more grey on the scale. He does commit near suicidal errors if there’s young blondes about and his body has been known to let him down, too.

    CB – The Hound

The Hound is hallmarked by a dogged determination and while he does get nervous when the heat is on, his size is enough to frighten any opposition. The big concern is that he might reignite a long-standing feud with his centre-back partner, potentially throwing both he and his older brother into the fire. Still, he’s an option for a more direct route having previously set-up Arya Stark for a crucial strike.

    CB – The Mountain

The Mountain has always been a massive presence with a talent for violence, but having undergone a career resurrection, he’s now an absolute monster. Freakishly strong, he’s much-feared but can be overly aggressive which is sometimes a little bit of an eye sore and difficult to watch. He should technically form a perfect band of FIFA Ultimate Team chemistry with his brother, but he long ago melted that relationship.

    LB – Jon Snow

Full-backs must blend an ice-cold composure with a burning desire to attack. Snow has the perfect lineage for the position. Worryingly, though, he’s been unable to fulfill his true potential given he was destined for greatness. Despite showing tremendous leadership qualities, he’s ended up left back in this defensive wall. However, he does work hard and constantly sacrifices himself for others.

    DM – Bran the Broken

Jaime Lannister pushed him out his previous role and while Bran now doesn’t possess much mobility, his excellent vision makes up for any paralysis. He’s one of those players that goes about his business quietly and he just has that habit of being two steps ahead of the rest, almost as if he sees what’s going to happen before it does. Bran is also press resistant which is key for this position.

    CM – Grey Worm

What Grey Worm lacks in what Diego Simeone likes to call “cajones”, he makes up for with tremendous heart. Loyal and committed, Grey Worm is happy to throw the rules of engagement out of the window on the orders of his leader, especially if a team-mate is chopped down.

    AM – Tyrion Lannister

This team has plenty of size and stature but to unlock the toughest defences, it needs a player with the intelligence to really understand the game. Premier playmakers are diminutive and Tyrion’s low centre of gravity enables him to manoeuvre through backlines undetected. He also has the tactical flexibility to operate within different systems, although the Lannister does occasionally produce a misplaced pass. Could be called upon to repay any club debt.

    RW – Drogon

Drogon is a flying winger who has the maddening ability to eviscerate the opposition but then fire in crosses with a bit too much heat behind them. He’s unpredictable, though, because he can literally burn any defence. There are obvious communication issues and that may mean he’s left isolated especially as he’s a unique beast given retirements elsewhere and with his spiritual leader, Daenerys Targaryen, missing from the set-up.

    ST – Arya Stark

Arya has that knack of being in the right place, at the right time. She’s able to ghost into key areas undetected, striking quickly and accurately on the counter. Despite her slender frame, Arya has a fantastic leap as she proved in plundering the decisive strike against the Night King. There are big concerns she may seek a move elsewhere, though.

    LW – Jaime Lannister

Jaime has a massive reputation having taken down royalty but he is past his prime and wears the scars of battle. As such, he tends to favour his left side, practically ignoring his right entirely. His partnership with brother Tyrion is crucial as the younger sibling has a knack of releasing him free of danger.
