There have been no strong rumours linking Leroy Sane to Barcelona, but why? Young, exciting and, on paper, a perfect fit for Barca. Additionally, he could be available in the upcoming transfer window. In this article we analyse why should Sane be a top priority for the Blaugranas in the summer.

Leroy Sane might just be the perfect player for Barcelona. The Catalan board, however, doesn’t seem to be considering him as a viable option to add to the team this summer. This article will analyse the playing style of Sane and will comment on why he should be one of, if not the, top candidate to become the talisman forward for Barcelona over the next decade.

Sane primarily plays on the left, but he can also be deployed in attacking midfield or on the right. In 134 games for Manchester City, the former Schalke start has accumulated 84 goal contributions (39 goals and 45 assists), producing these numbers while still young and in most competitive squad in the world, under arguably the world’s most demanding manager, Pep Guardiola.

Key passes and finishing are his two main traits. In the 2018/19 Champions League season, he had four assists, created six big chances and averaged 1.6 key passes per game. His supreme vision, together with his technical ability, allows him to give the perfect ball to his team-mates.

He’s a very clinical finisher as well. Sane’s clutch strike against Liverpool in City’s narrow 2–1 title-deciding win in the 2018/19 Premier League is one which perfectly illustrates his clean striking ability, and given City’s profligacy in front of goal recently, he’s definitely been missed.

In 31 games last season, the German missed just five big chances and in the Champions League he didn’t miss a single one. Had Sane been present in the Barcelona team at Anfield, the outcome would have been a different one entirely.

In addition to this, Sane is a brilliant dribbler. In the 2018/19 Champions League term he averaged 2.4 dribbles per game. His pace is not the only factor behind his successful dribbling, as his ball control, technical ability and his undeniable intelligence all contribute to this. His talent to carry the ball on his own shows that he can decide matches all by himself. Moreover, his passing is remarkable. Guardiola is, of course, a big reason as to why this is. Not only can he make those key passes, but his link-up play and aptitude to make short intricate passes is phenomenal.

Why Leroy Sane to Barcelona is a possibility

Sane’s contract with City expires in 2021 and if he doesn’t extend, the club risk losing him on a free, meaning a €120-million player could be on the market for half that amount.

In the past, he’s publicly talked about the fact he is a Barcelona fan and that would make any potential deal much easier to facilitate. Yet, there have been no rumours linking Sane to Barca.

Bayern Munich are the only club reportedly interested in him as Barca have focused mainly on re-signing Neymar and acquiring Lautaro Martinez from Inter.

However, the club should reconsider and contemplate the option of signing one of the best forwards on the planet for a relatively lower fee.

Sane is among a select group of players with huge experience at the top level with years still ahead of him. He has both experience and almost 10 years of top-level football left in him. Every big club in the world is or should be interested in him, and that is not a coincidence. His talent and his hard work could see him go a long way. With the stars aligning, Leroy Sane might just be Barcelona’s next big thing.
