For the first time in the competition’s history, the Super Cup will take place outside Egypt, where Premier League winners Zamalek will face the yet-to-be-determined Egypt Cup champions.

The news was confirmed by EFA president Gamal Allam who said an initial agreement has been made with an unnamed sponsor to hold the match in the northern Emirate.

“Staging a Super Cup match abroad is not a novel concept and there are many countries who have made that move such as Saudi Arabia who will play their Super Cup in London this year,” added Allam.

EFA board member Mahmoud El Shamy rejected claims that the Super Cup was moved outside the country for security reasons, saying: “The game will be staged in Dubai for marketing purposes and not for security reasons.”

An estimated 400,000 Egyptians live in the UAE. Zamalek ended Ahly’s 10-year monopoly of the league title by capturing this season’s trophy – their first since 2004.

Ahly, who finished in second place in the league table, are still alive in the Cup, along with Zamalek, and they both have last 16 matches this weekend.

Should Zamalek win the Cup, Ahly, as league runners-up would be their opponents in the Super Cup, tentatively scheduled for October 15 in Dubai.
