  • Fresh faces: Emmanuel Emenike (top left) scored twice in Al Ain's win over Al Nasr.

After Al Ain's victory over Al Nasr in the Arabian Gulf Super Cup, here's a look at how the new men performed at Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium.

    Emmanuel Emenike

    Age: 28
    Position: Striker

The Nigeria international enjoyed a dream debut, notching after three minutes and being presented with an open goal to complete his double. He made the most of few chances coming his way, the hot night detering runs from deep to support him. Also made his presence felt by smartly winning several free-kicks. Improved fitness should show he can lead the line.

    Ryan Babel
    Age:
     28
    Position: Winger

The Ajax youth product remains a work-in-progress for the Boss. His smart and selfless spin allowed Emenike to score, but he failed to build on this moment. Visibly – and understandably – struggled with alien conditions. The best from him might be some time away. Main positive was willingness to shoot and get in the penalty area.

    Fellipe Bastos
    Age: 25
    Position: Centre midfield

What an impression the unheralded Brazilian is making. Was a force to be reckoned with throughout, teaming up superbly with centre-midfield partner Lee Myung-joo. But there is more to the energetic 25-year-old’s game than pure brawn. His deft pass to Mohammed Fayez was exceptional. Bastos looks a great find for the Boss.

    Nilmar
    Age:
     31
    Position: Striker

This was a harsh re-introduction to Middle Eastern football. He came up against the solid UAE centre- back starting pair, was left too isolated too often and the weather would have been a shock to the system. Yet there were glimmers of hope, a few expert blocks preventing a debut goal. Expect Nilmar to do well in the Arabian Gulf League.

    Jonathan Pitroipa
    Age:
    29
    Position: Winger

The familiar surroundings of Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium eased the wide man’s adaption. Was exceptional in the first half, providing a constant out ball as the Blue Wave sat deep. Dribbled past the full-backs for fun and almost won a penalty. Should provide an expert supply line to Nilmar and help jump Al Nasr up the top-flight standings.

    Luis Jimenez
    Age:
    31
    Position: Playmaker

You know what you are going to get with a player so well versed in UAE football. Jimenez is still working to get on a wavelength with his team-mates, yet he asked difficult questions of the Boss on several occasions. Will rue hitting the side netting deep into injury time, but with his track record you know the goals will eventually come. Is determined to make a good impression.
