  • Arsene Wenger has laid down the gauntlet to his current Arsenal squad and urged them to emulate the ‘Invincibles’ squad that marched to the 2003-04 Premier League title.

In a host of awards being presented over the past few weeks to mark the 20th anniversary of the Premier League, Wenger’s 2003-04 side has been named the greatest team of the era. They swept to the title unbeaten with an 11-point winning margin and, led by the mercurial Thierry Henry, did it in breathtaking style.

That remains the club’s last league title and following the emergence of Chelsea and now Manchester City as contenders, Arsenal’s title challenges have diminished in recent years.

However, Wenger is determined to get the Gunners back into contention next season and the Frenchman is convinced his current crop have the ability to achieve what Patrick Vieira, Henry and co managed eight seasons ago.

“My target is to get back to that, to get back to that level,” said Wenger.

Despite a 19-point gap between third-placed Arsenal and the two Manchester clubs at the end of the current campaign, Wenger insists his squad will pose a greater challenge next season.

“I feel personally we are not far from coming back to fight for the championship,” he added. “Let’s hope we can show that next season.”

The north London club have already begun their transfer dealings for the summer by signing FC Koln and Germany striker Lukas Podolski, and are thought to be closing in on a deal for Rennes and France midfielder Yann M’Vila.
