Liverpool have Fiorentina winger Juan Manuel Vargas in their sights according to his agent but they face a battle with Spanish side Malaga if they are to secure his signature. The 28 year old has been linked with Liverpool over the past few months but so far there has been no official bid for the player.
With it looking likely that Liverpool have missed out on prime target Gylfi Sigurdsson to Premier League opponents Tottenham, the acquisition of Vargas could be Brendan Rodgers’ first signing since taking the manager’s job at Anfield.
Vargas has one year remaining on his contract with Fiorentina and agent Jorge Cyterszpiler said ‘There is the possibility that he [Vargas] will leave Fiorentina. ‘But at this time it’s just a rumour and there is nothing official.
‘He didn’t have the best of seasons and he needs to make up for it next season.
‘Liverpool is an option, but there is also Malaga that has the fascination of playing in next season’s Champions League.
‘Does he have a preference with regards to playing the Premier League or the Primera Liga? Vargas likes both leagues as well as the Serie A.’
Juan Manuel Vargas has played with Fiorentina since 2008 after moving there from Catani for £9.5 million. Real Madrid were rumoured to have been interested in the player at that time but the Peruvian stayed in Serie A. With Malaga and Liverpool both interested, Vargas may now be able to fulfil his Premier League or Primera Liga ambitions.
