  • Fiorentina have agreed a fee to sign Spanish midfielder Borja Valero from Villarreal throwing the future of Liverpool midfielder Alberto Aquilani in doubt.

Valero, 27, who is yet to agree personal terms, was also being tracked by Atletico Madrid following the Yellow Submarine’s relegation to the Segunda Division.

A Fiorentina statement read: “Villarreal and Fiorentina confirm they have reached an agreement for the outright transfer of the player Borja Valero. This will be subject to the signing of the player’s contract.”

News of the Viola’s move for the former West Brom playmaker will be of particular interest to Liverpool fans after it had been reported earlier this week that Aquilani was close to a £7 million switch to the Artemio Franchi.

However, the imminent arrival of Valero, who will join the mass exodus at El Madrigal following Villarreal’s relegation last season, may now throw that deal into doubt.

Other departures from the Yellow Sunmarine this summer have seen goalkeeper Diego Lopez join Sevilla, Brazilian striker Nilmar sign for Qatari side Al-Rayyan, and Dutch midfielder Jonathan De Guzman move to Swansea.
