  • Newcastle United are still trying to tie up a deal for PSV Eindhoven’s Swedish striker Ola Toivonen, according to reports in the British press this morning.

Newcastle have been tracking the player for much of the summer, but now it seems they are ready to push through a deal valued at around £7 million.

Back in June, the likes of Fiorentina and Liverpool were thought to be leading the chase of the Swede – whose father is Finnish – after he notched 18 goals in the Dutch league last year.

Although he failed to make a mark on Euro 2012, mainly because of the presence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, his strike rate of a goal every two games in the Eredivisie has marked him down as one of Europe’s most highly coveted forwards.

Newcastle have had a relatively quiet summer, failing to land their principle target Mathieu Debucy, although they have managed to keep striker Demba Ba. They may also be staying in Holland to pursue their interest in Ajax’s Vurnon Anita.
