Long before that famous night in Istanbul, Liverpool had already showed they could battle back from three-nil down… United were in cruise control after goals from Steve Bruce, Ryan Giggs and Denis Irwin.
The Reds pulled one back before the break through Nigel Clough, and then went on to secure the most unlikely of points in the second period…

David James lived up to ‘Calamity James’ monicker in this one as his error all but sealed the title for Manchester United.
Gary Pallister scored an unlikely double, either side of John Barnes’ equaliser, before James’ mistake handed Andy Cole a third to put United in the driving seat for the title which they duly wrapped up.
Liverpool 2-2 Manchester United, May 5, 1999
Another famous Liverpool comeback ensued when ex-United midfielder Paul Ince’s late goal prevented his former club from getting all three points. But it didn’t prevent them from going on to claim the treble.
Goals from Dwight Yorke and Dennis Irwin had put United 2-0 up early, but Liverpool were awarded a controversial penalty which Jamie Redknapp converted. After Denis Irwin was given his marching orders it was left to Ince to seal the comeback.

Liverpool 2-3 Manchester United, September 11, 1999
An error strewn match which saw Massimo Taibi make an eventful debut and Jamie Carragher score two own goals.
Carragher ‘opened’ the scoring early on heading into his own net, before Andy Cole doubled United’s advantage. Hyypia pulled one back but another Carragher own goal rendered Patrick Berger’s late strike meaningless.
Liverpool 3-1 Manchester United, November 4, 2001
Another goalkeeping mistake, this time by Fabian Barthez, helped Liverpool to a 3-1 win over their rivals.
Michael Owen opened the scoring with a great finish before a John Arne Riise wonder goal doubled the home side’s advantage. David Beckham then pulled one back, but Owen had the final say pouncing on a Barthez error to seal the 3-1 win.
