  • Bayern Munich’s hopes of progressing to the knock-out phase suffered a mauling in Minsk as they slumped to a shock 3-1 defeat at Belarus champions BATE Borisov.

Bayern’s defence leaked goals either side of half-time as Aleksa- ndr Pavlov, then Vitali Rodionov put BATE on their way.

France winger Franck Ribery pulled back a late consolation in the 91st minute, but a brilliant Renan Bressan goal from a counter-attack, 10 minutes after he came off the bench, left Bayern well beaten.

Elsewhere in Group F, Valencia got their campaign up and running as two goals from Jonas were enough to leave Lille ruing a host of missed first-half opportunities.

Indeed the Brazilian opened the scoring just as the French side seemed most in control of the clash on 38 minutes as he swept home Roberto Soldado’s deflected pass.

And the three points were assured for the hosts when Jonas’ 74th-minute cross deceived Lille goalkeeper Mikael Landreau to drift in at the back post before the visitors were reduced to 10 men when Mathieu Debuchy was dismissed late on for a second booking.

Juventus could not deliver a first Champions League victory at their new stadium but the Bianconeri can count themselves lucky to have salvaged a 1-1 draw against Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Juventus Stadium hosted its first European fixture since opening last summer but it took a thunderbolt from defender Leonardo Bonucci to guarantee a share of the spoils after Alex Teixeira had put the Ukrainians ahead.

Meanwhile, Braga produced an away smash-and-grab of their own with a rare 2-0 win at Galatasaray.

Braga were on the wrong end of an opening-day shock when they were humbled 2-0 by Cluj at home but after Ruben Micael stabbed in a 27th-minute opener Braga soaked up the home pressure and sealed victory through skipper Alan.
