  • Benfica’s Argentina winger Eduardo Salvio does not think it would be hard to adapt to life in the UAE, as he hinted at a possible move to the Pro League in the future.

The Europa League-winning 22-year-old was part of the Eagles side that took on Bani Yas in Al Shamkha earlier this week and has been impressed with the facilities on offer in Abu Dhabi.

A number of South Americans currently ply their trade in the UAE top flight, including Salvio’s compatriots Mariano Donda at Al Wasl and Matias Delgado at Al Jazira.

It is unlikely the Argentina international – capped six times by his country – would welcome a switch just yet, but he refused to rule out a move further down the road.

“This is our first experience here [and] it has been wonderful. We are enjoying the place and we are taking every minute to enjoy and to learn about this different and wonderful culture,” he told Sport360°.

“There are wonderful conditions to play in here, in general you have a lot of good conditions to play football here.

“I know that a lot of South American players come here to play and they enjoy the heat. I don’t think I would have any trouble to adapt to this new country because the conditions here are very similar to South America because it is very hot also.

“And as I know from other players they are enjoying a lot living and playing here.”

For the time being though Salvio is dedicated to helping Benfica regain the Portuguese Liga title they last won in 2010, and also aid their progress in the Champions League.

Having also played for Atletico Madrid in Spain – where he twice won the Europa League – since leaving his homeland for Europe, the 22-year-old feels fortunate to have been part of two such historic clubs.

He added: “I feel like a privileged guy to be able to play for Atletico Madrid and win two titles, two important titles, and play with Benfica a very important club. I appreciate the people that trusted me in Atletico and now here with Benfica.”

Aside from some R n’ R for the players not involved in international games, Benfica’s short sojourn in the UAE has also opened the door to potential link ups with both Pro League club Al Jazira and the Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC).

Indeed, a meeting between officials from the Portuguese giants and the ADSC led to both expressing their wish to have “distinguished cooperation and contribute to the developing of football academies in Abu Dhabi.”
