  • The win sees Al Shabab climb to fifth in the Arabian Gulf League.
Al Shabab recovered from their Arabian Gulf Cup-heartache by completing the double over Al Wahda courtesy of Azizbek Haydarov’s late penalty.
Haydarov, 30, stepped up in the 87th minute after Chile playmaker Carlos Villanueva was upended by Sultan Alghafri. He converted for a second time this week from 12 yards to earn a valuable three points in the Arabian Gulf League, which saw the Hawks overtake their opponents into fifth.
The Uzbekistan defensive midfielder’s effort had been in vain on Tuesday when Al Ahli prevailed 3-2 to make it to April 1’s showpiece.
New Clarets signing Rim Chang-woo had gone closest in the first half, the South Korea right-back forcing a good early save from Adel Al Hosani.
Meanwhile, star signing Khamis Esmail helped Al Ahli keep up the pressure on leaders Al Ain as he scored a fine goal during a 3-0 thrashing of hapless Emirates Club.
The Red Knights needed just nine minutes to go ahead, 2015 AFC Player of the Year Ahmed Khalil netting with a rebound. By the 38th minute, €17 million (Dh81m) record buy Moussa Sow had his fourth goal this week as he tapped in following a comical misunderstanding at the back.
Esmail then hit a trademark thunderbolt in the second half for his first goal since last week’s switch from Al Jazira to keep Ahli three points behind the Boss and inflict a ninth-successive loss on the Falcons.
