  • On a mission: Ismail Matar (l).

Midfielder Denilson’s first-minute goal last week saw the Clarets defeat Al Shabab in the Arabian Gulf Cup final and end a five-year wait for silverware. Their next target is the third and final qualification spot from the Arabian Gulf League to the continent’s premier club competition.

They resume after the international break with the chance to overtake occupants Al Wasl during the visit of lowly Emirates Club.

“For us, it has been five-and-a-half years since we last won a trophy,” said 33-year-old Matar. “It is really nice, also for our fans.

“Our target is to finish in the top three and make the AFC Champions League. I hope we can do that.”

Meanwhile, Shabab have been presented with an excellent opportunity to get over their cup-final heartache with the visit of already-relegated Al Shaab.

The Hawks are down in seventh. For boss Caio Junior, he bemoaned a regression from last term’s top-three finish and lifting of the GCC Club Cup.

“I would like to apologise to the fans about the loss of the final,” said the Brazilian, who has one year left on his deal. “My mission is difficult, this season has not been easy.

“Al Shaab will play without pressure, while our problem is about creating chances and scoring goals.”
