  • Al Ain coach Zlatko Dalic thanked the club’s hierarchy for plucking him from obscurity after victory in last night’s President’s Cup final.

Dalic, 47, was an unheralded appointment following a spell in Saudi Arabia with Al Hilal when recruited by the Boss in March.

The Croat has exceeded all expectations since, leading the club to the AFC Champions League quarter-finals and beating all-conquering Al Ahli 1-0 in Sunday’s showpiece.

“We improved everything in the last three months, but it is not only my job,” Dalic said. “Thank you Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Khaled Al Nahyan for having the confidence in me.

“When I came to Al Ain, not many people knew me – I am not a big name coach but I work hard.

“I did not ask for anything when I came here – no money, no bonus – as I only needed a chance.

“God gave me everything. My players trust me and I trust them – I only had to give them confidence as Al Ain are the best team, with the best players.”

The Croat – who two weeks ago signed a contract extension until summer 2016 – has lifted the spirits of a squad in disharmony before his arrival, suffering only two defeats in 14 competitive matches.

He revealed the depth of his faith in the players when discussing their pre-match preparations, saying: “My meeting with my players lasted a few minutes, without tactics. I said only three points: ‘play with heart, play with spirit and be calm – we are the better team and we will score a goal’.”

Boss midfielder Ibrahim Diaky enthused about the value of Dalic’s paternal approach, hoping it could provide the platform for a glorious campaign after the summer break.

“He did a good job giving confidence back to the players and I think that was the difference because he believed in us, he gave us confidence to fight back for him and for the club,” said the Ivorian.

“We have changed the character and the mentality. I think it will get even better next year, so it was very important for us to win this cup to get ready for next season.”
