Al Wasl are on the hunt for a new coach after they sacked ailing boss Gustavo Quinteros in the immediate aftermath of their Bur Dubai derby defeat to Al Nasr.

Quinteros, 53, was appointed during May after last term’s third-placed finishers made the surprise decision not to extend Rodolfo Arruabarrena’s contract.

However, the ex-Ecuador and Al Nassr supremo would go on to win just two of his opening six Arabian Gulf League fixtures. A home reversal on Friday to the Cheetahs’ bitter rivals proved terminal to his prospects, with a large crowd of disgruntled supporters protesting both the ex-Bolivia defender’s continued employment and the club’s current board.

“Al Wasl decided to dismiss the technical apparatus of the first team, led by Gustavo Quinteros, following the modest results achieved by the team during the recent period,” a tweet from the club’s Twitter account read.

“We have commissioned assistant coach Hassan Al Abdouli to take the leadership of the team.”

The interim boss made his name as part of Mahdi Ali’s backroom staff that took the UAE to the London 2012 Olympics, lifted the 2013 Gulf Cup and finished third at the 2015 Asian Cup. He was, though, dismissed as UAE Under-23s boss in the wake of July 2017’s failure to make the 2018 AFC U-23 Championship.

Al Abdouli’s first task is Wednesday’s trip to Shabab Al Ahli Dubai Club – who are now managed by Arruabarrena. He has inherited a side who sit a distant ninth, just three points off the relegation zone.

Predecessor Quinteros has been dismissed by Ecuador, Nassr and Wasl during the last 14 months.

In Dubai, he only managed to beat lowly Dibba Al Fujairah and Emirates Club from a total of 11 games in charge.

A solitary point was gained in three Arabian Gulf Cup matches, although he did get past Saudi Arabia’s crisis club Al Ittihad in the Zayed Champions Cup first round.
