AGL round-up: Sharjah widen gap at the top with win over Al Ain

  • Sharjah managed to see off Al Ain 2-1 at Hazza bin Zayed Stadium on Wednesday to open up a four point lead at the top of the Arabian Gulf League.

    The league leaders broke the deadlock in the 25th minute of the top of the table clash when Ryan Mendes crossed for Welliton Soares to slot away.

    Khalid Eissa then brought down Igor Coronado inside the area and the Brazilian converted from the spot to double the away side’s lead just past the hour-mark.

    The hosts pulled one goal back through Marcus Berg six minutes later when he controlled and stroked Bandar Al Ahbabi’s cross into the bottom corner.

    Elsewhere, Emirates grabbed a dramatic late equaliser to salvage a point in a 3-3 draw with Al Nasr at Emirates Club Stadium.

    Alvaro Negedro and Cheick Diabate both bagged braces for this sides while Samuel Rosa Goncalves also scored for the visitors. However, Eisa Ali Abbas had the final say with a free-kick deep into stoppage time.

    Ajman beat Ittihad Kalba 3-2 at Kalba Union Stadium with Mame Baba Thiam scoring the decisive goal in the 75th minute.

    Bani Yas registered their second win of the league campaign, defeating Al Dhafra 2-1 at home in the mid-table clash.
