Sharjah came out ahead in the battle of the big guns as prolific Welliton’s second-half header earned a 1-0 victory against Al Jazira in the President’s Cup round of 16.

The Brazilian striker rose highest in the 66th minute to convert compatriot Igor Coronado’s corner. This was the 32-year-old’s 14th goal in 15 matches this term and it earned the spoils for the Arabian Gulf League’s leaders versus the third-placed chasers.

Elsewhere, Mali centre forward Cheick Diabate scored all four goals for Emirates Club in a 4-1 thrashing of First Division League’s Hatta.

This was the struggling Falcons’ second win from nine matches in all competitions. Luan Dos Santos had struck in the 46th minute to give last season’s relegated side hope at 2-1.

A second-half own goal from Ajman defender Mohammed Ali Shaker earned a 1-0 win for promoted Fujairah.

Ex-UAE striker Saeed Al Kathiri’s volley and Brazilian midfielder Diego’s penalty handed Al Dhafra 2-1 victory over lower-league Dibba Al Hisn.

In Sunday’s matches, Bani Yas battle Al Nasr and Shabab Al Ahli Dubai Club meet yo-yo club Ittihad Kalba.
