  • Ivanovic will remain at the helm of the Blue Wave.

Coach Ivan Jovanovic will continue his hunt for more trophies with Al Nasr after he signed a two-year contract extension which will tie him to them until the end of the 2016/17 season.

Jovanovic, 52, has proved a huge success since he joined from Cypriot giants APOEL FC in June 2013.

A 12-year wait for silverware was ended in his debut campaign when the GCC Club Cup was claimed, following this up last January with the Arabian Gulf Cup.

The Serbian’s current deal was set to expire this summer, but the Blue Wave moved quickly to tie up fresh terms with the boss who also led them to fifth in the 2014/15 Arabian Gulf League.

“The contract extension decision represents the interest of the company to stabilise the coaching team, as well as building on the mutual desire between management and the coach to see the completion of the plan which began two seasons ago,” a Nasr statement said.

Nasr remain in contention for further titles this season despite being eliminated by Dubai neighbours Al Shabab in last night’s GCC semi-final, meeting President’s Cup holders Al Ain at the quarter-final stage on Saturday.

The new deal was agreed several months ago, Jovanovic’s signature waiting until the end of their top-flight commitments.

Team manager Khaled Obaid believes continuity is key if Nasr are to achieve their aims of climbing up the rankings in the future.

“This is very good news for the club and we are very happy with Mr Jovanovic,” he said. “We place great value in having a coach who knows the club, knows the players and knows the league.”
