  • Continent’s kings: Australia.

Abu Dhabi’s Zayed Sports City Stadium has emerged as the proposed venue to kick off the 2019 Asian Cup after Tuesday’s first meeting of its Organising Committee.

Eight stadiums in four cities were put forward in Doha, Qatar for the inaugural 24-team running of the tournament. The continental governing body’s Executive Committee are expected to ratify decisions about the 28-day event today, which will also include venues in Dubai, Al Ain and Sharjah.

“I am sure that in the next three years they (the UAE) will work extremely hard to emulate and even exceed their predecessors,” said Saoud Al Mohannadi, chairman of the AFC Organising Committee.

“With world class stadiums and the assistance of this Organising Committee, I am sure that they will maintain the astonishing rise of the AFC Asian Cup.”

Al Jazira’s Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium and Al Wahda’s Al Nahyan Stadium will complete the capital’s representation.

In Al Ain, both Hazza bin Zayed Stadium and Khalifa bin Zayed Stadium will be used.

In Dubai it is proposed there would be two venues – the Zabeel Stadium and the still to be confirmed Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum Stadium.

The eighth venue will be Sharjah Stadium in the Emirate of Sharjah.

At least five matches will be allocated to each venue, with every ground hosting at least one match in the knock-out stage.

The semi-finals will be played on different days in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

There will be no third/fourth place game.
