Lethal duo: Suarez and Messi.

Barcelona‘s equalising goal against Valencia on Sunday was a vital one for a side looking to avoid a second loss in three La Liga games, but the strike also had greater significance.

Lionel Messi‘s long-range goal came after a one-two with Luis Suarez, and though it didn’t prevent Barca from slipping to a fourth straight league game without a win, it did put Suarez in the history books.

No player has assisted Messi more times in La Liga than the Uruguayan, who set up his strike partner for the 27th time in the competition.

That took him past former Barca right-back Dani Alves, the current Paris Saint-Germain right-back who had assisted Messi 26 times during a eight-year spell in Catalonia before leaving for Juventus in 2016.

Another former club of Alves, Sevilla, have taken over top spot in the league thanks to Barca’s draw, with the two sides set to meet at the Camp Nou after the international break.

Gerard Pique has been under fire over his form.

Gerard Pique believes he is unfairly blamed for any goal Barcelona concede, after the centre-back was criticised for his role in Valencia’s second-minute goal during Sunday’s 1-1 draw between the two sides.

He failed to completely deal with a Los Che corner in the build-up to Ezequiel Garay’s goal, the latest in a string of high-profile errors from Pique this season that have cost Barcelona, who lost top spot in La Liga to Sevilla due to the result despite Lionel Messi‘s brilliant equaliser.

However, the defender believes the criticism he is receiving is harsh, and stems from people in the media having it out for him.

“I know that there are many people who are hoping that things don’t go well for me,” the 31-year-old said.

“They can enjoy it, they should come out of their caves and enjoy the sun. There are many people waiting for me and want to go for me.

”When we concede a goal it’s my fault, there are people who are waiting for me, but not only in Madrid. The TV can take advantage, come out of the cave, because this is going to change.”
