Real Betis coach Quique Setien

Real Betis boss Quique Setien believes Barcelona legend Johan Cruyff would have been happy about the way his team lost on Sunday.

Betis handed Barca a taste of their own medicine as they dispatched the Catalan team 4-3 at the Camp Nou.

The fact that boss Setien employed a variation of juego de posicion, Barcelona’s philosophy for most of the last decade, only makes it sweeter.

Not only did Betis win, but they did it in style. Los Verdiblancos displayed an aesthetically pleasing brand of football in the process.

“Teams always come to this field, knowing that they’ll suffer,” said Setien, who has been tipped as a future Blaugrana boss.

“However, we also know that with our mechanisms and the things we do well, we can have the ball if we play with character and are able to soak up pressure.

Betis were brilliant against Barcelona on Sunday.

Betis were brilliant against Barcelona on Sunday.

“We had a great game against a great team. We showed great character and read the game very well.

Betis became the first team to score four goals at the Camp Nou in over 14 years.

“Winning here and scoring four goals is something that will stay with us forever. To all those who like real football, who try to see things beyond the result, they’ll have liked what they saw,” he added.

The beautiful football has made Betis them the neutral’s favourite team, and Setien is very pleased with that.

“Cruyff would’ve been happy that his team had lost. That’s why there are many people who like and enjoy Betis, and we’re proud of that.

“Although we know the result is vital, it’s also one to remember.”

Arturo Vidal was very vocal about his disdain for Barcelona’s defending in their 4-3 home defeat to Real Betis on Sunday, claiming the Blaugrana simply “can’t lose like this at home”.

The veteran Chilean came on at half-time at the Camp Nou and gave Barca hope of an improbable comeback with his second goal for the club late on.

Speaking after the match he took aim at the team’s defending. “We started badly and they took advantage of the two chances they had in the first half and like this it’s difficult, we can’t lose like this at home,” said the 31-year-old.

“We had chances to come back but we have to improve other things. Teams can’t come here and bang in four goals against us.”

Ernesto Valverde’s side’s defensive record this season is a real worry. They haven’t kept a clean sheet in La Liga since August and only Levante, Athletic Bilbao, Rayo and Huesca have conceded more.

“We have to work on that, see the mistakes and make sure they don’t happen again,” added Vidal.
