Barcelona are set to hold talks with Carles Alena over the young midfielder’s future at the club, according to Sport.

The 20-year-old has graduated to the first team this season after impressing during his rise through the club’s academy. However, he’s made only two senior appearances this term.

Alena continues to play for Barcelona B when the opportunity arises, a sign of his commitment to the club, but would no doubt prefer more first-team opportunities.

Barcelona have a logjam in midfield, however, with Ivan Rakitic, Sergio Busquets, Arthur, and Arturo Vidal all entrenched, and Philippe Coutinho and Sergi Roberto also available to play in midfield when required.

Indeed, Vidal, a summer signing from Bayern Munich, has been frustrated at his own lack of minutes, highlighting the difficult path to the first team for Alena at the moment.

But keeping Alena at the club remains a priority for Barcelona. They have come under fire from some quarters recently for not promoting enough youth players, and the famed La Masia academy is under scrutiny for not consistently producing first-team players in recent years.
