  • Barcelona have rekindled interest in Antoine Griezmann after the superstar forward grew frustrated about Atletico Madrid’s recent failings, according to reports.

Griezmann, 27, publicly rejected strong overtures from the La Liga champions last summer via his controversial ‘The Decision’ documentary. But with support needed for the ageing Luis Suarez up top and the France international becoming vexed by 2018/19’s inability to challenge for top trophies, the Catalans are preparing to go back in with a fresh bid.

L’Equipe have stated that an approach has been made to representatives for a contract worth €16 million, net, until 2024. Barca also believe they can land the player for €120m until June, as the €200m clause in a new deal was only valid last summer.

Griezmann’s change of heart comes after Atleti surrendered a 2-0 first-leg advantage to crash out against Juventus in the Champions League’s round of 16 during midweek. Saturday’s 2-0 loss at Athletic Bilbao also ended any slim hopes of landing the La Liga crown, with suitors Barca potentially opening up a 10-point lead when they meet Real Betis on Sunday.

The attacker has notched 130 times in 247 appearances for Los Rojiblancos since July 2014’s €30m switch from Real Sociedad.

Eintracht Frankfurt loanee and Serbia forward Luka Jovic had been rumoured to be Barca’s No1 target.
