Gerard Pique believes that Barcelona are obliged to win the trophies they compete for and the absence of some players is not an excuse for failing to meet the objective.

Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele missed Barcelona’s Copa del Rey final clash against Valencia. The Catalans were 2-1 losers on the night, with the lack of fire-power in the front-line glaringly obvious.

Pique, however, believes that they can’t be hiding behind any excuses and must be held responsible for what happened at the Benito Villamarin.

“When you don’t win and you have absences you can blame them, but I don’t think there are any excuses,” Pique said after the final whistle, according to Marca.

“We’re Barcelona, we have to win everything and even more so against Valencia.

“We have to congratulate them and try to win everything next year.”

The defender also maintained that under-fire coach Ernesto Valverde still has the backing of the dressing room.

“We don’t worry about the coach’s future,” he said.

“We have to analyse on an individual level after each game and see what we can improve.

“The decisions aren’t in our hands but we’ve said more than once that we’d like him to continue.”
