  • Debut goal: Sule is not known for his goalscoring prowess.

Bayern Munich defender Niklas Sule is set to be sidelined for the rest of the season and could miss next summer’s European Championship with Germany after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament, according to president Uli Hoeness.

The centre-back was forced off in the 12th minute of Bayern’s 2-2 Bundesliga draw at Augsburg on Saturday.

Speaking to German media ahead of Bayern’s Champions League trip to Olympiacos, Hoeness confirmed that Sule’s campaign had ended prematurely after undergoing surgery on Sunday.

“This is a total catastrophe. A drama,” Hoeness told Bild. “It looks like the season is over. You can forget about the European Championship. Forget it.

“He must get fit again in time for the new season. We’ll help him with that.”

It will come as a blow for Germany boss Joachim Low – who have yet to qualify for Euro 2020 – after Sule started in the 2-2 friendly draw with Argentina and 3-0 qualification victory against Estonia earlier this month.
