  • Kompany's season has been marred through injury.

The Belgian defender has been left frustrated on the sidelines as his side have seen their pursuit of an unprecedented quadruple hit trouble.

But he returned from a six-week absence with a calf injury to play in Sunday’s 2-1 loss to Premier League title rivals Spurs – his first full 90 minutes of action since November 8.

And, with an FA Cup fifth-round trip to Chelsea, a Champions League last-16 tie with Dynamo Kiev and League Cup final showdown against Liverpool to follow, Kompany wants to play his part in a season-defining period.

“I feel great, I’ve worked extremely hard,” said the City skipper. “There’s always that part that people don’t see, the thing you do behind the scenes, and for me it’s been grafting and just making sure I get the most out of the rest of this season and the rest of my years where I can be at my top.

“I look after everything now. I have got a certain amount of time left to play and want to make the most out of it. I don’t want to let anything slip.

“If you guys could see me when I am not playing, you would understand why I say I always come back stronger.

“I am thinking I could have been a bit quicker, or a bit more mobile, or I could have worked on this or that. I do that all the time whilst injured, and that is why I come back stronger. I am very, very, very headstrong so that was never a problem for me.”

City boss Manuel Pellegrini said the club would carry out thorough investigations to find the cause of Kompany’s constant muscle woes.

And the centre-back, 29, added: “It wasn’t so much of a quest, but I definitely wanted to make sure I didn’t do anything wrong myself.

“I found out what the problem might be, and it’s not something that should be a problem for the long term. I need to manage it for the first few months, but that is one thing I have got out of the last six weeks. I’m always hopeful, of course [that the issues are behind me].

    Kompany's City honours

    • Premier League: 2011-12, 2013-14
    • FA Cup: 2010-11
    • League Cup: 2013-14
    • Community Shield: 2012

“The only thing is I want to achieve greatness, like anyone else in this industry, and I want to be allowed to just play all the games, like this one [against Spurs]. We didn’t win, but I enjoyed it. But nothing will break me.”

Kompany also believes City are not out of the title race either. They are fourth, six points behind leaders Leicester and four adrift of Spurs and Arsenal.

But they clawed back an eight-point deficit to triumph in 2012 and then seven points in 2014, and Kompany said of the loss: “It’s a setback, but we wouldn’t know our personal history well if we didn’t expect to kick on from here.

“I was saying before, speaking to the Spurs boys, pick your game and tell me which game is going to be easy. There’s none. This Premier League is crazy and that’s why we’re just not going to give up.”
