  • Towards the end of his record-breaking tenure at Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson’s relationship with Wayne Rooney had soured so much so that he revealed the striker’s intentions to leave in the summer of 2013.

The Scot never shied away from getting rid of stars once he felt they could no longer contribute significantly or if he thought they were disrupting the dressing room.

However, the celebrated manager retired in 2013 and Rooney went on to become club captain and continues to feature for the Old Trafford outfit.

Nevertheless, Ferguson has always maintained his admiration for the England skipper and in an interview with BBC recently, revealed his favourite Rooney goal.

With the striker breaking Sir Bobby Charlton’s 44-year-old scoring record for Manchester United by notching his 250th strike in the 1-1 draw with Stoke City, Ferguson pointed to the 31-year-old’s overhead kick in the Manchester derby in 2011 as his favourite.

“It got a deflection on the ball, so as he’s making the run towards the box as Nani crosses it, it’s taken a deflection away from him and forced him to mobilise his body to do what he did. Which makes it even better.”
