  • Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has had a road named after him in his hometown of Setubal, Portugal in honour of his achievements in football.

The seafront road, Rua da Saude, was rechristened the Avenida Jose Mourinho in a ceremony on Tuesday, with Mourinho himself in attendance along with his mother, and the mayor of Setubal.

Mourinho revelled in the occasion, saying, “I’m grateful, excited, and proud.”

“I still want to come to Setubal and be who I am. I come to Setubal because I love Setubal. Setubal remains the only city where I feel like myself, where I feel like Ze Mario (his Portuguese nickname), where I walk on the street and people treat me like I like to be treated.”

The mayor, Maria das Dores Meira, said Mourinho was a “son of Setubal, a man of the world, a global personality” who “fills us with pride”.

“He is really special. This is a tribute of a city and country that want to perpetuate this special name.”
